Crimes
Against Furniture with Douglas Stocks
Valerie:
It’s free advice time from the expert – Douglas Stocks.
What are the worst things that people do to their furniture?
Douglas
Stocks: The worst thing starts with the right hand and
they put a saw in it -- and I help when they do this -- and they
cut the table down the middle because it’s too wide and they
want a pair of consoles. And they cut they legs off and they make
coffee tables, or they cut holes in the top of a chest of drawers
to put sinks in. So the worst thing you can do to a good piece of
furniture is to cut it. You make it taller, shorter – they
add feet to it. I’ve seen a grandfather clock a little while
ago and they cut about six inches off the
bottom because it was too tall for the hallway so instead of being
worth $10,000 it’s worth $2,000.
Valerie:
And these are crimes against furniture.
Douglas
Stocks: Crimes. And the one everybody does, they use spray-on
polishes, it has silicone in it – ruins the finish. This poor
table here, it suffers a little bit from that, also, wet pots and
hot pots. So don’t put hot pots, cold pots, any kind of pots
on your furniture and not spray finishes.
Valerie:
So what do you polish it with?
Douglas
Stocks: Nice paste wax – and you rub it on, you do
it twice a year, it’s easier than the spray stuff and the
furniture will last forever and so will the finish.
Valerie:
And if anyone comes to Douglas and says “will you take the
legs off this coffee table?
Douglas
Stocks: Just bring your saw (laughs).
Valerie:
You might strangle them! Don’t do that!
Douglas
Stocks: I’d never.
Valerie:
Perfect!
