Clocks
Douglas
Stocks: … and the style is the Sheraton style but actually
it’s not 1810, it’s more like 1920 because there was
a revival in that style. It was a nice clock except you probably
bashed it there…
Owner:
Oh, no, that’s how I got it…
Douglas
Stocks: Oh, yeah, sure – now the face is a little screwy so
we should get that in there and get it straightened. Does it run?
Owner:
Yes.
Douglas
Stocks: Well, that’s great, but you can’t tell the time,
can you?
Owner:
No… I did get it fixed once.
Douglas
Stocks: Now in here it says “10-3-19” so at one point
a jeweler on October the third in 1919 fixed this clock so we know
it’s before then but we know that it’s probably after
1890. Now somewhere in there in that general period, that clock
was made. And unless I take it apart, I can’t tell you specifically
where it was made, but I would bet it’s English. Now that
one is not English, that’s an American clock. You see that
“A”? That stands for Ansonia and Ansonia – oh,
what’s this made of?
Owner:
Cast iron. It’s heavy.
Douglas
Stocks: Oh, it is, let’s have a peek… whoa! It weighs
a ton.
Valerie:
Do you want me to open it?
Douglas
Stocks: Yes. That side?
Owner:
Yes, this side.
Douglas
Stocks: There it is… the Ansonia Clock Company patented on
June 14, 1881, New York. Now they probably were made in this design
for about fifteen years. Until after about 1900. And it’s
a take off on a Louis XVth clock, updated from 1900. Ummm…
does it work?
Owner:
(laughs) If you wind it, I guess.
Douglas
Stocks: Well, in the middle up at the top here we’ve got this
“S&F” and that stands for “slow & fast”
so when you run it, if it needs to be keyed up, you put the key
in there and crank it to the fast, et cetera. It’s a very
nice clock, great, great style if you like Louis XV – he was
rather flamboyant and it has a slight art nouveau feel because of
its swirly pillars and all these feet, it’s a bit glitzy for
some people, I think it’s great…
Owner:
How much?
Douglas
Stocks: It’s worth about… let’s jump to the chase
here… how about four to five hundred dollars.
Owner:
Four to five hundred dollars, and what about this one?
Douglas
Stocks: That? Oh, sorry… that one, I’d say about a hundred
to a hundred and fifty…
