Great Finds in 2005

Although
the guest’s item wasn’t what she thought it was, it was valuable
nevertheless. Montreal silver expert David Brown informed the woman who’d
brought her husband’s great great grandfather’s ‘teapot’
that it was actually a hot water kettle, used by servants to top up the
teapot. The kettle came with an ornate silver stand, both of which were
made by renowned Scottish silversmith, John McKay and are now valued at
between $3500-4000.
This
beautiful bust and pedestal had long been enjoyed by the guest who brought
her in to the Montreal show. Purchased overseas in the 1920’s by
the woman’s grandfather, the guest was surprised to learn that the
art nouveau influenced lady was made of alabaster rather than marble and
had a value beyond the sentimental. Appraiser Liz Isaac suggested its
owner insure it for between $6000-7000.
