This plate was purchased by my grandmother, in Wales, about 35 years ago. It was found in an antiques store, and brought here to Canada. We've been unable to perform much research on this plate, and would appreciate any of your aid. The plate is 8" in diameter, and though we haven't tested it, apparently croaking sounds are made when you pour some water on the plate, and it filters through the plate's crannied surface.

Unfortunately, the stamp on the plate's bottom is very difficult to discern, even when looked at closely. Any of your time will be greatly appreciated.

The plate, though purchased in Wales, is actually Portuguese and is a type of pottery usually referred to as Palissy Ware.

Identified by its typical colouring and plentiful applications of fish, worms, frogs and even lobsters this 19th century copy of a 17th century production is becoming quite sought after today. I don't think the frog croaking when it fills up is anything more than an over fertile imagination I am afraid.

The Value today is $100-$200 at auction.
