This
medal was recently passed to me by my late mother. She told me once her
Father had received this Medal from his Grandfather. Could you please
give me a bit of History about this Medal, and its approximate value?
We
asked Geoffrey Bell to respond:
This medal is referred to as “Boulton’s
Trafalgar Medal.” It was given to Royal Navy personnel who served
in 1805 at the Battle of Trafalgar. They were issued in gold, silver,
white metal, gilt-bronze or bronze.
The obverse features a bust of Nelson and the reverse a battle scene.
Boulton of the Soho Mint struck the medal on his own and gave it to survivors
of the Battle of Trafalgar. It was restruck on two occasions. The bronze
specimen is valued at between $300 and $500. Gold and silver are obviously
much more valuable.
