Meet Glass Expert Janet Carlile

Janet began collecting antiques seriously about a decade ago because she "wanted to know more about artifacts: how they were made and how they were used. After my first degree in Canadian History I didn't really want to teach so I went to London where I had the opportunity to do a course at Sotheby's...." read more

A ship in a bottleAs promised from last newsletter, here is more information about these items…

Expert Rosemary Beckett looked at a great ship in a bottle in Moncton, but neither she nor the guest was able to determine whether or not Snug Harbour was an actual place. There is a Snug Harbour near Liverpool, Nova Scotia, but it is impossible to say whether this is the inspiration for the item. The guest believed that the bottle had been made by her grandfather or great-grandfather, but she wasn’t certain. She only knew that “it’s been in the family as long as my dad can remember.” Rosemary was quite taken with the item because it was “in its original bottle, the stopper is still intact.”

Yoruba mask

Appraiser Uno Langmann believes that this 20th century mask was made by the Yoruba people who live on the west coast of Africa in Nigeria. The Yoruba are one of the largest cultural groups in Africa; there are about 40 million of them world-wide. They are well known for their unique artistic traditions including beadwork, woodcarving, sculpture, metal work and textiles. This mask is likely worth about $50.

Oil Lamp

The guest who brought this oil lamp to Kitchener has been an avid collector for over 20 years. This particular lamp, which he got “for a bargain” is an American made cranberry opalescent coin dot lamp and it was worth considerable more than what he paid for it eight years ago.

We’ve had a great response to this year’s tour. Here’s what some of you have said:

Just a note to say how much we enjoyed the day at the Roadshow at Dundurn Castle in Hamilton! Neither my friend nor I will be able to 'retire' if we sold our articles (nor do we want to sell them anyway), but we had so much fun there! Our questions were answered and even though the appraisers were under time constraints, we didn't feel rushed through. Everyone seemed to have everything under control, even with the amount of people there. We met so many nice people in the lineups! Made a couple of new friends, and got a photo taken with Valerie Pringle. Please keep up the good work, and we hope you have as much fun doing the show as we had attending it.

...............................

I had the great experience to attend the Hamilton Roadshow. Although the items that I brought had no great monetary value the experience was of greater value. I would like to congratulate the Antiques Roadshow and the CBC for a great job. The event was well organized, everyone was friendly and courteous and the appraisers were wonderful. Good job to all and thank-you for the experience.

...............................

I received tickets for the Vancouver Roadshow, flew in to Vancouver the morning of the show and just wanted to say I had a GREAT TIME! My stuff wasn't worth much, but oh well-it was a blast anyway. looking forward to the next time you come to Calgary.
