Saskatoon,

While
the Saskatoon area has been inhabited for some 6,000 years, it was not
until the summer of 1883 that the first settlers began to arrive and subsequently
in 1903 that the town charter was obtained. The name "Saskatoon"
is derived from 'mis-sask-quah-toomina', the Cree Indian name for a local
indigenous berry.
From the turn of the century until 1914, Saskatoon boomed with economic
activity. The Western Development Museum’s Saskatoon branch, 1910
Boomtown, manages to capture some of that tremendous growth in their living
museum. This depiction of a typical Saskatchewan town captures the atmosphere
and style of this bustling period with over 30 buildings including a general
store and a blacksmith’s shop.
The Canadian Antiques Roadshow felt right at home in place where history
comes to life, partly because of the artifacts left behind.
